Vesak, is a significant Buddhist festival celebrated across Sri Lanka and other countries. It marks the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha. During Vesak, Buddhists commemorate these events through various religious observances and acts of generosity.
Homes and streets are adorned with colorful lanterns and decorations, symbolizing enlightenment and the light of Buddha’s teachings on this day. Devotees visit temples to participate in rituals, offer prayers, and listen to sermons. Many Buddhists also engage in acts of charity, such as distributing food and alms to the needy, reflecting Buddha’s teachings on compassion and kindness.

Esala Perahera is a grand and historic Buddhist festival celebrated in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is one of the oldest and most important cultural events in the country, dating back to the third century BC. The festival, held in July or August, honors Lord Buddha’s Sacred Tooth Relic, which is housed in the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa).
The Perahera, or procession, features a series of colorful and elaborate parades that last for ten days. The festivities include traditional Kandyan dancers, drummers, fire-breathers, and richly adorned elephants. The highlight of the event is the grand procession on the final night, where a replica of the Sacred Tooth Relic is paraded through the streets of Kandy. The festival attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists from around the world, showcasing Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage and religious traditions.

Poson, also known as Poson Poya, is an important religious festival celebrated in Sri Lanka, particularly by Buddhists. It commemorates the arrival of Buddhism to the island in the 3rd century BCE, specifically when Arahat Mahinda, the son of Emperor Ashoka of India, introduced Buddhism to King Devanampiya Tissa of Sri Lanka.
During Poson, which is usually held in June, devotees go to the ancient city of Anuradhapura, where important events in the spread of Buddhism occurred. They attend religious ceremonies, pray, and go on pilgrimages to Buddhist temples and sacred sites. One of the main rituals during Poson is the illumination of thousands of oil lamps (known as pandols) and colorful lanterns, which represent the spread of Buddhism’s light. Devotees also perform acts of charity and abstain from worldly pleasures as a form of spiritual purification.
